Heal Faster, Move Better — Photobiomodulation for Post-Surgical and Injury Recovery

Give Your Body the Support It Needs to Rebuild

Recovering from surgery or a serious injury is rarely a straight line. Between swelling, stiffness, scar tissue, and the frustration of a body that won’t cooperate the way it used to, the weeks and months after an operation or an injury can feel like the hardest part of the whole process — even after the procedure itself is behind you.

At Austin Red Light Therapy, we support that recovery with targeted red light therapy (photobiomodulation/PBM), serving clients throughout South and Central Austin — from Zilker, Travis Heights, and Bouldin Creek to South Lamar, 78704, and Downtown. Our flexible, medical-grade LightMD pads rest directly against the skin near your incision, surgical site, or injured area, delivering red and near-infrared light designed to support your body’s own repair processes — without adding another pill, another procedure, or another thing standing between you and getting your life back.

A Non-Invasive Complement to the Recovery Plan You Already Have

We know you’re not coming to us instead of your surgeon or physical therapist — you’re coming to us alongside them. PBM is not a replacement for medical care, physical therapy, or your surgeon’s post-op instructions. It’s a comfortable, drug-free addition to the plan you’re already following, aimed at supporting circulation, easing inflammation, and helping the tissue around your injury or incision do its job.

Sessions are quiet and low-effort: you lie back, we place the light-contact pads over the treatment area (once your surgeon has cleared the site for this kind of therapy), and you rest for 40–60 minutes. No needles, no manipulation of the injury itself, no added strain on a body that’s already working hard to heal.

The Science: How Photobiomodulation Works

Healing is, at its core, a cellular process — and photobiomodulation works at exactly that level. Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are absorbed by the mitochondria inside your cells, prompting them to produce more cellular energy (ATP). More available energy means your cells can do the work of repair — rebuilding tissue, calming inflammation, and clearing out cellular waste — more efficiently.

Our LightMD system doesn’t apply one flat mix of light for the full session — each program moves through distinct phases, and the ratio of red to near-infrared light shifts within each one to match what that stage of healing calls for:

  • Calming Inflammation: Programs suited to reducing post-injury or post-surgical swelling.
  • Driving Tissue Repair: Programs suited to supporting the deeper cellular work of rebuilding muscle, connective tissue, and skin.

Clinical Benefits Supported by Research:

  • Support for the body’s natural tissue-repair and wound-healing processes
  • Reduced post-injury and post-surgical inflammation and swelling
  • Improved localized circulation to the healing area
  • Support for muscle and soft-tissue recovery following strain, sprain, or surgical repair

  • Return-to-Activity Support: Helping active clients and athletes work back toward full movement and training after an injury
  • Chronic or Old Injuries: Ongoing stiffness, scar restriction, or lingering discomfort from an injury or surgery that happened months or years ago

Session Options & Pricing

We offer flexible timing options to fit your specific recovery goals.

A Note on Packages: If you’re managing a longer recovery timeline, multi-session packages can lower your per-session cost — ask us about a plan that matches your surgeon’s or physical therapist’s recommended timeline. First time in? Here’s what to expect during a session.

Prefer to recover at home or in your office? We also offer mobile sessions for clients who’d rather not travel during recovery.

FAQs About Recovery from Injury or Surgery

This depends entirely on your procedure and your surgeon’s guidance. Many clients begin once an incision has closed and any stitches, staples, or surgical dressings have been cleared for removal or exposure by their surgeon. Always get explicit clearance from your surgical team before your first session — we’re happy to work around whatever timeline they recommend.

We follow your surgeon’s guidance on this closely. Once you’re cleared for light contact over the area, our pads are gentle and non-invasive. If your incision is still open, draining, or otherwise not yet cleared by your surgical team, we’ll wait until it is.

No — PBM is meant to complement, not replace, the plan your surgeon or physical therapist has laid out for you. Many clients use sessions alongside their physical therapy to support how their body responds to that work. We recommend keeping your surgeon or PT in the loop about anything you’re adding to your recovery routine.

Red and near-infrared light are commonly used together to support healthier-looking healed tissue at incision and injury sites. Results vary by individual and by how the scar has already formed, especially for older scars.

No — and this is something clients often ask about. Each program is really a sequence of phases rather than one constant setting. A session might move from an early phase that supports circulation and tissue oxygenation, into a phase focused on active tissue repair, and finish with a phase that helps the area settle into a stable, healed state. The mix of red and near-infrared light shifts within each phase to match what that stage of recovery needs, so it’s normal to notice the visual change as the light goes from red to near-infrared (which is invisible to the naked eye) throughout the session.

Absolutely. A lot of our injury-recovery clients aren’t in the first weeks after surgery — they’re dealing with a strain, tendon issue, or old injury that’s been nagging them for months. The same targeted, deep-penetrating approach applies.

This varies by the type and stage of your injury or surgery. Some clients come in for a handful of sessions during an acute recovery window; others build it into an ongoing routine while working through physical therapy. Some even build PBM into their health routines because of the many, ongoing benefits! We can talk through a realistic cadence based on what you’re recovering from.

Not at all. The treatment is completely painless, non-invasive, and drug-free — most clients describe it as a warm, relaxing sensation. There is zero downtime, so it fits easily around physical therapy appointments or a busy recovery schedule.

Tips for a Great Session

  1. Bring Any Surgeon or PT Guidelines: If you have specific restrictions on your incision or injury site, let us know before your session so we can work within them.
  2. Wear Accessible Clothing: Loose-fitting clothing (or a tank top/shorts) allows our flexible light pads to sit directly against your skin for maximum absorption.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Drinking water before and after your session supports circulation and helps your body flush metabolic waste as cellular repair kicks in.
  4. Relax & Unwind: Recovery takes a toll on the nervous system too — use the session time to actually rest, not just “get through” another appointment.

What to Expect During Your Visit

  • Careful Placement: Direct-contact, flexible light pads are placed over your incision, injury site, or surrounding area — never on open or unhealed wounds.
  • Soothing Warmth: Enjoy 40 to 60 minutes of gentle, therapeutic warmth that supports your body’s repair processes.
  • Zero Downtime: No recovery period, mess, or stress — just supportive care that fits into the recovery you’re already managing.
  • A Team That Listens: Tell us where you are in your recovery and what your surgeon or PT has recommended, and we’ll tailor the session accordingly.
